PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Stout (In 1860 his waist was 39", in 1905 it was 47"), 5'7", pale blue eyes, receding chin.
PERSONALITY:
As a child he had many sudden, frightening rages, bad temper -- a difficult child. Chronic overeater, heavy smoker (12 cigars/20 cigarettes per day). Gregarious, licentious, embarrassingly virile and promiscuous. Indiscrete, immature, moody, irritable, impatient. Partisan, free of bigotry, impressionable, conservative. No intellectual curiosity, seldom read, easily bored, could not bear to be alone.
COMMENTS:
Teased his sons unmercifully, preferred the company of his seniors. A fashionable clothes horse. Interested in racing, shooting, gambling, and women. He had chronic bronchitis and possibly Porphyria.
